Meet Your Commencement Speakers
Faculty Speaker Bio: Sarah Burnett, Ph.D.
Her journey led her to The Gambia, where she spent a year teaching before earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in social anthropology from the University of Swansea in Wales. After graduation, she emigrated to the United States, where unexpected turns led her to early intervention. She obtained a master鈥檚 degree from Johns Hopkins University and dedicated herself to supporting families with young children with disabilities鈥攑roviding the kind of assistance her own family never received.
More life changes brought her to teaching, first part-time at RCCD and then full-time at 萝莉研究所 in 2005, where she became a faculty member in Early Childhood Education. In 2013, she achieved a milestone she once thought impossible鈥攅arning a Ph.D. in Special Education from Claremont Graduate University.
December 2024, Dr. Burnett embraced a new chapter, returning to early intervention and exploring the field of early childhood mental health, retiring from her full-time position at 萝莉研究所. She believes that life is about taking chances, stepping into spaces that challenge, and stretching one's limits. For Dr. Burnett, missteps are not failures but windows and doors leading to possibilities鈥攅ach shaping the person she is today.
Student Speaker Bio: Danelia Fernandez
Her academic journey has been marked by a passion for mental health research and a commitment to advocacy and service. Fernandez Sunsin has been an active member of EOPS, TRIO, Unity Zone, the Dreamers and Leaders Club, and has played leadership roles within her California College Corps Fellowship. From supporting therapeutic riding programs to restocking food pantries, she has turned acts of service into sources of healing 鈥� both for herself and the communities she serves.
Currently as a tutor and mental health aide with Step UP, she continues to create spaces of support for others. Her commencement address will explore the theme of resilience, shaped by her lived experiences with immigration, adversity and growth. She credits professors Nikky Caps, Melissa Wilson, and Mark Lewis, along with mentors Christine Lopez, Kimberly Thomas and Christopher Castillo for guiding her in discovering her own voice and strength.
Described by faculty as ethical, reflective and hardworking, Fernandez Sunsin plans to transfer to a four-year university and pursue advanced studies focused on trauma and healing. Her long-term goal is to earn a graduate degree in clinical psychology and work with children and trauma survivors.

Seating: For guests with disabilities, there will be limited accessible seating, available on a first come, first served basis. Once you have entered the soccer field, there will be a golf cart available to transport you to the accessible seating area if needed. Golf cart service will only be offered before the ceremony begins.
Wheelchairs/Equipment Unavailable: Wheelchairs and other accessible equipment are not provided by 萝莉研究所.
Yes, regalia will be available at the , and will be available for purchase in-store and online.
Students may purchase instore for quickest service. You may also purchase and have it shipped to your house. Please include your height and weight when ordering. Gowns are one size fits most; XL caps and gowns also available upon request, while supplies last.
馃帗 Cap & Gown 101: What You Need to Know Before Graduation
As you get ready to walk across that stage, here鈥檚 a quick guide to make sure you鈥檙e rocking your cap and gown with confidence.
馃鈥嶐煄� Where Do I Get My Cap & Gown?
You鈥檒l need to grab your own cap, gown, and tassel to participate in commencement. At 萝莉研究所, we keep it classic with a shiny black cap and gown.
Starting May 5, 2025, you can purchase your graduation gear at the 萝莉研究所 Bookstore鈥攁nd yes, it鈥檒l be available all the way through the day of commencement. But don鈥檛 wait 'til the last minute!
馃帗 How Do I Wear This Thing?
- Cap Fit: Your cap (a.k.a. mortarboard) should sit flat and level on your head鈥攏ot tilted back or to the side. The top should be about one inch above your eyebrows.
- Front vs. Back: Look inside the cap鈥攖here should be a label or tag that tells you which side is the front.
- During the Ceremony: Guys鈥攑lease remove your cap during the National Anthem. Otherwise, keep it on!
馃Д Gown Care Tips
- Hang it up ASAP:As soon as you get your gown, take it out of the packaging and hang it to help smooth out wrinkles.
- No Dry Cleaning Needed:Skip the washer and dry cleaner. If it鈥檚 wrinkled, just use a cool iron or steamer to freshen it up.
馃宪 What to Wear Underneath
Dress for comfort and the weather! Lightweight, breathable clothing is your best bet.
And when it comes to shoes鈥�comfort is key. You鈥檒l be walking from Grad Central to the football field and across grass, so save the stilettos for another day.馃帀 Tassel Time
Your tassel starts on the right side of your cap. Once everyone has crossed the stage, your student trustee will guide the group in the official 鈥渢assel turn鈥� from right to left鈥攊t鈥檚 a graduation tradition that marks your big moment!

Diplomas are distributed by the Office of Admissions and Records. They will be mailed to your permanent address approximately six weeks after degrees are conferred on June 13.
Diploma covers are distributed to students on stage at the in-person Commencement Ceremony.
Grad bash will be held in the bookstore on May 5th, from 9am-4pm. This will be the first day regalia goes on sale and we want to celebrate your accomplishments!! Stop by for a photo booth, cap decorating, sales on Norco merch, and all things cap and gown.

Commencement Participation Agreement
Students who would like to participate in the 萝莉研究所 2025 Commencement Ceremony,
but who missed the Spring 2025 graduation application deadline (April 1, 2025), can
still participate in the ceremony if they are within 9 units of completing their program
of study and have enrolled in the final units for Spring 2025, Summer 2025, or Fall
2025. Submit a request by completing the following steps:
- Complete a graduation application for the Summer 2025 term in > Graduation Overview (also under the 萝莉研究所 tab on the lefthand side).

When and Where is Commencement 2024?
Commencement takes place on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 6 PM at the 萝莉研究所 Soccer Field.
What takes place at the 萝莉研究所 (NC) Commencement Ceremony?
The NC Commencement ceremony is hosted by the RCCD Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, and the College President. The ceremony opens with a grand academic procession beginning promptly at 6:00 PM, followed by remarks from college leadership, the conferring of honorary degrees, addresses by the faculty and student commencement speaker, and the formal transition鈥攖he turning of the mortarboard tassel from right to left鈥攖hat marks the moment when members of the current graduating class officially become NC graduates and alumni.
Will the ceremonies be broadcast for those unable to attend?
Yes, for those who cannot join us at 萝莉研究所 on June 7, the in-person ceremonies will be broadcast online, live, and on-demand for future viewing. The broadcast will be available on our 萝莉研究所 homepage starting at 6 PM.
How do I participate in social media?
When posting to your social media, please use the hashtags #norcocollegegrad and #NC2024.
Do I need to attend the in-person Commencement ceremonies to have my degree conferred?
No, graduates do not need to attend to have their degree conferred, but you will be missing out on an event of a lifetime!!! While it is not required for students to attend the Commencement Ceremony, most alumni would agree that the ceremony exceeded their expectations and put an exclamation point on their time at 萝莉研究所. Family members have also shared that this is a great way to celebrate their student鈥檚 tremendous accomplishments because it is a big, spirited celebration!
I will be finishing my degree requirements this summer or fall (2024). Can I participate in this year鈥檚 graduation ceremony?
Students may participate in commencement if they are within 9 units of completing the requirements for the degree they have applied for. Any application received with a student lacking more than 9 units in order to complete requirements will be cancelled.
When does the graduate need to arrive on campus on Commencement Day?
In order to walk in the NC Commencement ceremony procession, you should be ready on Friday, June 7 no later than 4 PM at the Amphitheater next to the Center for Student Success Building. As parking and seating are on a first-come, first-served basis, it is wise to arrive early.
When should guests arrive on Commencement Day?
The ceremony begins promptly at 6:00 PM. We recommend guests to arrive between 4:30 PM 鈥� 5:15 PM to secure parking and seating. Those who arrive closer to 6:00 PM will have a very difficult time finding parking and seating. Wear comfortable shoes. It is a long walk from the parking lot to the soccer field. Seating is first come, first serve, we do not give out tickets with reserved seating.
What is and isn't permitted on the Soccer Field?
Please note that food, balloons, flowers, flags, silly string, whistles, posters, banners, umbrellas, noise makers, knives, or weapons of any kind are not allowed on the soccer field. However, you are allowed to bring bottled water with you. Moreover, bottled water and flowers will be available for purchase at this event. The proceeds from the sale of bottled water will go towards a fundraiser for one of the campus clubs.

Regalia
Do I need to wear regalia for the in-person Commencement ceremonies?
Yes, regalia will be available at the , and will be available for purchase in-store and online at . Please note students are only permitted to wear college related regalia.
Can I decorate my cap?
Yes, students may decorate their caps. Only the flat, top area of the cap may be decorated. Decorations must be flat on the surface of the cap and cannot disrupt anyone鈥檚 view of the ceremony. All caps will be reviewed the day of, and any caps deemed inappropriate by staff will be confiscated. You will need to purchase a new cap to participate in the ceremony.
Below are general guidelines to help you plan your decorations.
Approved Decor:
- Graduation year (no other numbers may be displayed on cap)
- Expressions of gratitude, inspirational quotes, positive messages
- Symbol of branch of military you belong to or may be joining
- Institution you may be attending in the future
- Symbol or message highlighting your major or student organization
- Your home country鈥檚 flag- no political words, statements, or slogans

Not Permitted:
The following will not be permitted, and will result in confiscation of the cap. Words, messages, abbreviations, or pictures that refer to drugs or controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol, weapons, gangs, violence, profanity, threats, political statement, of sexual nature, etc...
Will regalia be shipped to my home, or can I pick up on campus?

The Grad Regalia Set includes cap, gown, and tassel. Associate hoods and Honor cords have an additional charge.

Please call the 萝莉研究所 Bookstore at 951.372.7085 during business hours or email Bookstore@norcocollege.edu. Their business hours are 8:00 AM 鈥� 6:00 PM Monday 鈥� Thursday and 8:00 AM 鈥� 1:00 PM on Fridays.
How do graduates get honor cords?
Students graduating with Great Distinction are eligible to purchase an Honor Cord. Students graduating with Great Distinction or Distinction will receive a silver 2024 tassel marking their achievement.
Diplomas and Program Book
When will I get my diploma?

The commencement printed program will be available at the in-person ceremony on campus. You will also be able to download a copy of the program from the commencement website.

Faculty Speaker Bio: Melissa Bader, M.A.
Melissa鈥檚 journey at 萝莉研究所 demonstrates her versatility, having contributed as a member of the Academic Senate, the Professional Development Chair, serving as a representative for District Enrollment Management, and co-chairing District Guided Pathways. Her roles extend to co-chairing 萝莉研究所鈥檚 Guided Pathways work group, where she played a vital role in developing a nationally recognized Summer Bridge program. Her recent collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation illustrates her commitment to advancing student equity through mid-level leadership.
Grounded in the educational principles instilled during her time at the University of Washington, Bader believes in nurturing the learner within oneself and finding alternative ways to explain concepts. At 萝莉研究所, she has embraced the philosophy of "Yes, and..."鈥攁 testament to her commitment to heightening and exploring ideas.
Melissa鈥檚 multifaceted contributions and dedication continue to shape the future of education at 萝莉研究所 and beyond.
Student Speaker Bio: Jose Orozco
With a profound commitment to serving both his family and his community, Jose's involvement in various organizations unveiled his innate passion for growth and community empowerment. Jose鈥檚 contributions to his campus and community are extensive and include serving as Vice President of Student Organizations for ASNC and as a College Corps Fellow, contributing an astounding 900 community service hours to various partners, including Norco鈥檚 Basic Needs and Wellness initiatives and to the 萝莉研究所 Volunteer Corps.
Jose excels in STEM and computer science. He led the Loma Linda Prosthetics Research Project and contributed to the 3D Printed Flight Research Project. His involvement in programs like MESA, Men of Color, Rocketry, and STEM Club highlights his unwavering dedication to his fellow students and his campus.
Looking towards the future, Jose Orozco has been awarded the Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship at the University of California, Irvine. He plans to pursue two majors, Data Science and Computer Science, specializing in Bioinformatics. He aspires to delve deeper into research and contribute to the defense industry for the betterment of his nation.

Late Commencement Participation Request
Commencement Participation Request
Students who would like to participate in the 萝莉研究所 2024 Commencement Ceremony,
but who missed the Spring 2024 graduation application deadline, can still participate
in the ceremony by completing the following steps as long as they are within 9 units
of completing their program of study:
- Complete a graduation application for the Summer 2024 term. To access the form, log into and choose Degree Application or Certificate Application from the Students Menu. If you are within 9 units of completing your program of study and are taking any of the units in Fall 2024, ensure that you are registered for your fall coursework at the time you submit your graduation application.
- Visit the Academic Counseling and Career Development Center (Student Services building) in-person between the hours of 8:00am 鈥� 4:00pm Monday 鈥� Thursday or 8:00am to 12:00pm Friday and request a Commencement Participation Agreement. Students who can only visit the office between 4:00pm 鈥� 6:00pm Monday 鈥� Thursday may call the Academic Counseling and Career Development Center at (951) 372-7101 after their graduation application has been submitted to make alternative arrangements to complete the form.
Once the information has been verified, the student will be given the form to take
to the Bookstore in order to purchase their graduation regalia.

Faculty Speaker: Dr. Maria Jurado
Born in Quito, Ecuador, Dr. Jurado migrated to California at an early age, experiencing the challenges of adapting to an unfamiliar environment firsthand. This fuels her understanding of the importance of establishing effective support systems for students in similar circumstances. Prior to her current position, she worked as a high school counselor and assistant principal, driven by a commitment to make a positive impact on the Latinx population.
Inspired by Dolores Huerta's quote, Dr. Jurado deeply believes in the transformative power of education and is dedicated to empowering students to reach their full potential. Since joining 萝莉研究所 in 2015, she has exhibited unwavering dedication and passion for guiding and supporting students on their academic and personal journeys.
Student Speaker: Lino Leon
Lino's ambition extends beyond academics, aspiring to own a business focused on positive social impact by constructing infrastructure and communities. His remarkable transformation highlights tenacity and dedication, overcoming depression and drug addiction through sobriety, mental health recovery, and physical wellness.
Lino excelled academically, raising his GPA from 1.8 to an impressive 3.4, while using adversity as motivation to excel in student leadership and maintain sobriety. As part of the Disability Resource Center (DRC), he proves that disability does not hinder greatness, diligently grasping subjects and achieving rewarding results.

萝莉研究所鈥檚 Commencement Ceremony returned to the 萝莉研究所 Soccer Field on
Friday, June 10, 2022, to honor 萝莉研究所 Classes of 2022, 2021, and 2020. The
ceremony began at 6:00 pm.
After two consecutive years of being conducted in an online and drive-thru format with a recorded ceremony, those receiving their Associate Degree of Arts, Associate Degree of Sciences, and Certificates of Achievement walked across the stage in front of family and friends. Watch the ceremony below.

Dr. Peggy Campo
Dr. Peggy Campo
Dr. Peggy Campo has been a Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at 萝莉研究所 since
2008. She teaches science classes with passion and love and is highly regarded amongst
her colleagues and students.
Dr. Campo obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from La Universidad Cat贸lica
de C贸rdoba, Argentina; a Master of Science in Biology, from the University of California,
Riverside; a Master of Arts in Cell and Molecular Biology, from Harvard University;
and a Doctor of Education in Leadership in Higher Education from Northcentral University.
Dr. Campo鈥檚 spirit embraces the mission of California Community Colleges, stressing
equity, access, and inclusion, and recognizes that education is the most reliable
path to expand social and economic advancement.
Dr. Campo is an energetic storyteller who incorporates common everyday examples to
help students comprehend complex biological concepts. She lectures with enthusiasm,
humor, and care. Dr. Campo does not take herself too seriously, but seriously cares
about her students and their success. She loves both science and learning and hopes
that her fervor for both shines through to her students.
Dr. Campo is an influential member of the Biology Department having served as the
Norco Academic Senate President for five years and District Academic Senate President
for two. During her tenure as senate president, she advocated for guided pathways,
military credit for prior learning, and diversifying faculty. She can easily be found
on campus, conversing loudly with everyone- avidly gesticulating, using colorful language,
and laughing wholeheartedly.
Dr. Campo has been married for close to thirty years and is the proud mother to three
children and multiple four-legged creatures. She lives close to her parents, siblings,
nieces, and nephews, and considers family-time precious. She enjoys traveling, reading,
and eating well.
Ms. Ahlam Gheith
Ahlam Gheith is a powerful woman who has overcome tremendous odds and exudes compassion
and kindness to all those with whom she interacts. She is the proud mother of seven
children and returned to college after 20 years. She is a proud Palestinian-American
and has been an honored resident of Riverside County for more than 10 years. Ahlam
attended Alexandria Senior High School in Louisiana and then went to the American
Airline Academy in Texas to earn a certificate in Travel and Hospitality. She understood
at an early age that to live a successful life she needed to have a mindset focused
on overcoming obstacles and staying positive during the most difficult situations.
Her trust in God and in herself with hard work and determination to achieving her
goals have been the backbone to her obtaining, five associate degrees at 萝莉研究所.
Her degrees are as follows: 1. Political Science, 2. Psychology, 3. Humanities, Philosophy,
and Arts, 4. Social and Behavioral Studies, and 5. Communications, Media, and Language.
Staying busy is never a challenge for Ahlam. She stays active in educating herself
both in and outside of the classroom. She loves to learn new skills and take on new
hobbies. She is an accomplished photographer. Even with her busy schedule she loves
to serve her community and others. She has volunteered coaching the Youth of her community,
fitness boot camps. She enjoys staying active with, outdoor activates, weightlifting,
and working out. Her hobbies include Photography, photo editing, reading, and Art
and loves the beach. She is passionate about educating herself as well as others.
As a result, Ahlam has been a board member for the School of Education of Reach Leadership
Steam Academy for seven years. She has also taught two years of Art, and physical
Education at a private school.
Ahlam is committed to her family and setting a good example for her children, she
leads by example. She is graduating from 萝莉研究所 with Honors and was a member
of the Dean鈥檚 List every semester she attended 萝莉研究所. Her future goals include
being a National Speaker advocating for others who can鈥檛 advocate for themselves,
motivating and helping individual growth, using her political science background and
psychology. She is committed to improving the lives of anyone she can help. She is
excited to help others achieve their dreams and goals. Her philosophy for life is
to trust in God and keep pushing forward, and never be afraid to start over! She is
living proof of Abraham Lincoln鈥檚 famous phrase that good things come to those who
wait, but better things come to those who hustle.
Ms. Gheith will be attending UCR in the fall double majoring in psychology and Political
Science with a minor in Communication Studies. Ahlam auditioned and was chosen to
be the 2022 萝莉研究所 Commencement Speaker because of her love of education and
her passion for positively influencing others..

COVID Related Information
The Riverside Community College District has suspended the vaccination verification and testing requirement for June 10 commencement ceremonies at its three colleges. The decision aligns with the California Department of Public Health鈥檚 (CDPH) guidelines. The CDPH does not require proof of vaccination, nor a negative COVID test, for outdoor events with less than 10,000 in attendance.
鈥淲e understand how special and important college graduation is to our students,鈥� Wolde-Ab Isaac, chancellor of RCCD, said. 鈥淭he mandating of proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test would have adversely impacted some families looking to celebrate their student鈥檚 accomplishment.鈥�

Graduates, Here is What You Need to Know:
Checklist of items for prior to Commencement on June 10.
- Do you have your Cap and Gown? You can't participate without one. Your student government has subsidized the cost. They paid $60, and you will only have to pay $20. Tassels, Honor Cords, and Sashes are additional charges.

Important things to know for the Day of Commencement:
- Graduates will arrive at 4:00 pm and go to the Amphitheater by the Library.
- You will check in and pick up your name card. You will be given the opportunity to write your name phonetically so there are no errors when you cross the stage.
- We will have a rehearsal in the Amphitheater so you will know exactly what to expect when Commencement starts.
- Snacks and water will be complimentary at the rehearsal for all graduates.
- Tell your guests that the gates to the Soccer Field will open at 4:30 pm and the ceremony will start EXACTLY at 6:00 pm (We anticipate ending no later than 8:30 pm)
- Bottled Water, Hawaiian Leis, and Flowers will be for sale at the Soccer Field.
- No food is allowed on the Soccer Field.
- Noisemakers of any kind are not allowed on the Soccer Field.
- Silly string is not allowed on the Soccer Field.

What takes place at the 萝莉研究所 (NC) Commencement Ceremony?
The NC Commencement ceremony is hosted by the RCCD Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, and the College President. The ceremony opens with a grand academic procession beginning promptly at 6:00 PM, followed by remarks from college leadership, the conferring of honorary degrees, addresses by the faculty and student commencement speaker, and the formal transition鈥攖he turning of the mortarboard tassel from right to left鈥攖hat marks the moment when members of the current graduating class officially become NC graduates and alumni.
Is this a ticketed event?
We do not require students to register their guest for this ceremony and we do not give out tickets. Seating is first come, first serve, we ask you to limit saving no more than 2 seats.
Will the ceremonies be broadcast for those unable to attend?
Yes, for those who cannot join us at 萝莉研究所 on June 10, the in-person ceremonies will be broadcast online, live, and on-demand for future viewing. The broadcast will be available on our 萝莉研究所 homepage starting at 6 PM.

Do I need to attend the in-person Commencement ceremonies to have my degree conferred?
No, graduates do not need to attend to have their degree conferred.
Do I have to attend the Commencement Ceremony?
While it is not required for students to attend the Commencement Ceremony, most alumni would agree that the ceremony exceeded their expectations and put an exclamation point on their time at 萝莉研究所. Family members have also shared that this is a great way to celebrate their student's tremendous accomplishments because it is a big, spirited celebration!
I will be finishing my degree requirements this summer or fall (2022). Can I participate in this year's graduation ceremony?
Students may participate in commencement if they are within 9 units of completing the requirements for the degree they have applied for. Any application received with a student lacking more than 9 units in order to complete requirements will be cancelled.
When does the graduate need to arrive on campus on Commencement Day?
In order to walk in the NC Commencement ceremony procession, you should be ready on Friday, June 10 no later than 4 PM at the Amphitheater next to the Center for Student Success Building. As parking and seating are on a first-come, first-served basis, it is wise to arrive early.
When should guests arrive on Commencement Day?
The ceremony begins promptly at 6:00 PM. We recommend guests to arrive between 4:30 PM 鈥� 5:15 PM to secure parking and seating. Those who arrive closer to 6:00 PM will have a very difficult time finding parking and seating. Wear comfortable shoes. It is a long walk from the parking lot to the soccer field. Seating is first come, first serve, we do not give out tickets. In addition, the lines may be longer due to checking bags for security reasons.
Is food permitted on the Soccer Field?
No, food is not permitted on the soccer field. However, bottled water may be brought onto the field. Bottled water will also be sold at this event as a fundraiser for one of the campus clubs.
Will wheelchairs be available for disabled guests?
No, wheelchairs are not available for guests. There will be a Disability Resource Center Booth available to answer questions, if needed. They can be reached in advance at either drc@norcocollege.edu or (951) 372-7070.
Could the Commencement be postponed if Riverside County experiences an increase in COVID related illnesses?
The situation with the pandemic is always fluid. If Riverside County moves back into more restrictive tiers, the State and County guidelines could prohibit gatherings of any size. NC will follow the guidance of Riverside County health officials 鈥� therefore all commencement plans may be subject to change.

Dominique Voyer
Professor Dominique Voyer, Ph.D., teaches Spanish and French, serves on the Academic Senate, and leads several roles relating to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion at 萝莉研究所 and in the Riverside Community College District. Her career in education began thirty-seven years ago and spans from teaching high school in Los Angeles, to higher education, both in France and in the United States. After a four-year appointment at California State University, San Bernardino, she joined the Riverside Community College District in 1996, first at Riverside City College, and later at 萝莉研究所, where she was Chair of the Department of Art, Humanities, and World Languages for nine years.

Ashley Calderon
Ashley Calderon School of STEM and Social & Behavioral Sciences Ashley Calderon was born in San Diego, California. She moved to Temecula her sophomore year and graduated from Chaparral High School. After graduation, Calderon enrolled at 萝莉研究所 to pursue a career in medicine.
Calderon鈥檚 grit pushed her to complete three years of college as a full-time math major, vice president of the Honors Society, and an athlete on the Women鈥檚 Cross-Country team. Her energy was endless and worked to help foster and homeless youth in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Despite the full load, Calderon had a knack for public service and landed an internship with California State Senator Connie Leyva, all while serving in the United States Army Reserve.Grad Stories

2018 Commencement
Review of the 2018 萝莉研究所 Commencement
Over 3,500 friends and family gathered at commencement to cheer on their loved ones
on Thursday, June 7. Emotions ran high on the soccer field as over 350 graduates walked-up
stage to accept their diploma. 萝莉研究所 Faculty Speaker, Buck Stevens addressed
the graduates with a speech of encouragement and hope. Student speaker, Maria Barragan
shared her story with a heart tugging yet inspirational speech. The evening was full
of excitement and celebration. Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

On Friday, June 1, John F. Kennedy (JFK) Middle College High School students graduated
with their high school diplomas, twenty-seven of whom also earned one or more associate鈥檚
degrees from 萝莉研究所 this spring. Additionally, eighty-five JFK students completed
their first year of college by the time they graduated from high school. Congratulations,
JFK Middle College/萝莉研究所 graduates!
Our JFK Middle College High School students continued to set the bar:
27 students who graduated JFK High School on May 31, also graduated from 萝莉研究所
on June 7.
85 high school student graduates from JFK also completed their freshman year of college
while attending HS.

2018 萝莉研究所 Student Commencement Speaker
Maria Barragan
Ms. Barragan was born in Mexico City and came to the United States at age of 5 with her mother and sister. She grew up all over California, but attended Charter Oak High School in Covina. Today, Maria resides in Jurupa Valley with her mother, sister and step-father.
Maria is a force to be reckoned with while at the same time has the sweetest demeanor. In her many leadership positions on campus, she has taken an active role in making a positive impact wherever she goes. She has been actively involved as a member of Dreamers and Leaders, Puente as a Peer Mentor and Historian, as well as ASNC. In ASNC, she has moved up through the ranks, starting as a Senator of Campus Activities, then Vice President of Campus Activities, and finally ASNC President for the 2017-2018 academic year. She is a member of the campus鈥� Academic Senate, Institutional Strategic Planning Council, and Committee of the Whole.
Ms. Barragan will be leaving behind many legacy programs, which she founded or co-founded, including Norco Fest, the Athletic Pep Rally, Silent Disco, and Chill Out (Snow Day), just to name a few. Maria is a Sociology major and will be attending the University of California, Riverside in the fall to pursue a B.A. in Sociology and one day a Guidance Counselor in Higher Education. 萝莉研究所鈥檚 Student Commencement Speaker Sub-Committee was proud to select Maria Barragan to give tonight鈥檚 keynote address.
2018 萝莉研究所 Faculty Commencement Speaker
Walter Stevens
In addition, he has directed numerous productions at the College, ranging from Shakespeare to classic Americana and musical theatre. He has also led Study Abroad programs to Oxford, England, Dublin, Ireland and Salamanca, Spain.
He specializes in performance techniques, Shakespeare and theatre history. He studied closely with drama theorists Robert Cohen and Jerzy Grotowski. When he is not teaching, Stevens directs and performs in productions throughout Southern California. Most recently, Stevens played the role of Lord Capulet in the New Swan Shakespeare Festival production of Romeo and Juliet.
Stevens holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artist and serves on the Board of Directors for the Dana Point Theatre Company.
A portion of each year, Stevens lives in the city of Bilbao, in the Basque Country of Northern Spain, where he enjoys research on the topic of Transcultural Performance and Prehistory. He regularly participates in the annual Festival de Teatro y de las Artes de la Calle.
